The site is finally live! I actually had the site installed about a week ago, but I hadn’t put it live yet, because it’s WordPress, and the plethora of themes are quite confusing.
It’s actually hard to find a good free author theme, and that’s where I was going wrong. Most of the themes show a “demo site” and the catch is, the free version almost never gives you that demo setup. What you actually get is a dumbed-down empty version of the site that looks nothing like that template screenshot that got you all excited.
So I spent quite some time going through all the available themes that seemed relevant, until I had an epiphany.
For some reason I noticed that the default WordPress theme, twenty-twenty four, has a different editor than all the rest. They have changed how sites are built from the way they used to be.
Initially, this new editor was confusing, but I found a great video on YouTube that teaches you how to use it to create pretty much any website you can imagine with it, because the new site editor has reusable elements, sort of like components if you’re familiar with JavaScript frameworks like React.
So once I realized this, I realized, we don’t need those fancy themes anymore. And one theme I did find was ok, but I didn’t like the way the content was overlapping with the header and footer, and it had some weird zooming when the page was opened. So I was happy to replace it with the stock default Twenty-Twenty-Four theme.
Here’s a link to that YouTube video, it’s a real game changer for me. He starts slow and builds to a crescendo in this one, so stick with it and you’ll understand by the end:
